REQUIREMENTS
  • Computer
  • Internet access
  • Speakers box or head-phone
  • Software:
    • QuickTime Player (FREE);
    • To participate in chat-room: Flash Player (FREE),
    • To read the PDF hand-out: Adobe Reader (FREE).

INSTALL SOFTWARE
  1. QuickTime Player (FREE)
  2. Adobe Flash Player (FREE)
  3. Adobe Reader (FREE)

AFTER the QuickTime INSTALL FOLLOW the CONFIGURATION INSTRUCTIONS
  • Setup the QuickTime Player on MAC:
    1. Launch QuickTime Player application;
    2. Select in the top menu the QuickTime Player / Quick Time Preferences...
    3. Click on Streaming Tab
    4. Streaming speed (speed depend on your Internet connection)
      We recommended 256 Kbits/sec
      CHPE available speed:
      •   56 Kbits/sec. - For slow connections (audio only);
      • 112 Kbits/sec. - For poor connections on a single computer;
      • 256 Kbits/sec. - For viewing on a single computer (Recommended)
      • 384 Kbits/sec. - For projecting onto a large screen
    5. Uncheck the Enable Instant-On
    6. Click on the Advance tab
    7. In the field Transport setup select: custom...
    8. Choose the http transport protocol and the port ID 80
    9. Click OK
    10. Close the window
    11. Close QuickTime Player
    12. Close your browser if it was opened so the new setting could take charge next time you use the browser.

  • Setup the QuickTime Player on Windows: Method 1
    1. Launch QuickTime Player application: Start / All Programs / Select QuickTime Player
    2. From the menu select Edit / Preferences / Quick Time Preferences...
    3. Click on Streaming Tab
    4. Streaming speed (speed depend on your Internet connection)
      We recommended 256 Kbits/sec
      CHPE available speed:
      •   56 Kbits/sec. - For slow connections (audio only);
      • 112 Kbits/sec. - For poor connections on a single computer;
      • 256 Kbits/sec. - For viewing on a single computer (Recommended)
      • 384 Kbits/sec. - For projecting onto a large screen
    5. Uncheck the Enable Instant-On

    10. Click on the file tab:

      2. Video: check QuickTime Movie
    11. Click Apply
    12. Close QuickTime Player

    14. You should now have the new settings.

  • Setup the QuickTime Player on Windows: Method 2
    1. Start your web browser
    2. In the address bar type: http://cme.mcgill.ca
    3. Click on the "enter LIVE event" link under the live section
    4. Login with your email and password
    5. If you see a slide show of picture with music, you are in the right place
    6. Click on the downward arrow in the right-hand lower corner of the player and select "Plug-in settings"
    7. Click on Streaming Tab
    8. Streaming speed (speed depend on your Internet connection)
      We recommended 256 Kbits/sec
      CHPE available speed:
      •   56 Kbits/sec. - For slow connections (audio only);
      • 112 Kbits/sec. - For poor connections on a single computer;
      • 256 Kbits/sec. - For viewing on a single computer (Recommended)
      • 384 Kbits/sec. - For projecting onto a large screen
    9. Uncheck the Enable Instant-On
    10. Click on the Advance tab

    13. Click on the file tab:

    15. Refresh or reload the page.

Chat-Room
  • The chat is important for interactivity.
    1. For Mac OS X run your software update and it will update your Java.
      For Windows first be sure you have the latest version of java.
    2. Make sure Java is turned on your browser (Preferences)
    3. The streaming page is using Pop-up, if you have blocked Pop-up you will need to open the Webcast and the Chat-room manually.
    4. In the Chat Window: You will have to insert a "User Name" use a screen name not your email or password. Insert any name you want. The allowed characters a-z, AZ, 0-9, -, _.
    5. Note the chat will open as a floating window that you can resize and put anywhere on your screen.

FireWalls CONFIGURATION INSTRUCTION

    Some customers notice issues getting the video du to there firewalls Hardware or Software.
    We are webcasting trought the port 80 (Used for viewing web pages HTTP protocol).

    The default ports that QuickTime use for clients to server data exchange are:
    TCP ( 554, 7070, 8000, 8001, 80 )

    NOTICE:
    One of our customers reported that FireWall Software Trend Micro blocked the QuickTime signal even if the Firewall is disabled.
    The solution is from Trend Micro: Look the Solution (This solution hasn't been tested by McGill CHPE.)

    Please contact our technicians if you have to resolve similar issue. This way we will update our help information.


QuickTime - Adjust the connection speed
  1. Click and hold on the arrow head in the right lower corner of the movie
  2. Select the Connection Speed... menu.
  3. Select a connection speed, we recommand 256 Kbits/sec.
  4. Refresh or reload the page.

TEST
  • CONFIGURATION
    1. Start your Web browser (Internet Explorer or Safari)
    2. Click here to get to the Test and other help page
    3. Look for the section How can I test my system for the CHPE live QuickTime Webcasts?
    4. If you can't see the "Q" logo of QuickTime the Browser did not see the QT installation, go back to the installation section and check for missed steps.
    5. Try the first 2 examples
    6. Example 1: Section Test#2. Click on the Play (small arrow on the grey bar) under the first screen on the right. You might see a 2 persons interview. To stop the video, click on the Pause ( || ).
    7. Example 2: Section Test#3. Click on the image of a blonde lady on your right, should open an other window and the movie will start
    8. If you can see the two videos in examples 1 and 2 with sound, your QuickTime Player has been properly installed on the computer.
  • ACCESS
    1. Start your Web browser (Internet Explorer or Safari)
    2. Go to the CHPE home web page http://cme.mcgill.ca
    3. Look for the Enter Live Event, click on the link.
    4. Enter your email (same one that you inserted in the Registration Form) and the password that have been sent to you by email, if you don't remember use the Forgotten Password link.
